Simon Love

Following on from his 2018 album “Sincerely, S. Love x”, Tapete Records are proud to present Simon Love’s new record “LOVE, SEX and DEATH etc” out on Friday April the 8th 2022.

The 12 songs, written between 2017 and 2019 mostly, were recorded in two batches in July and November 2020 after being rehearsed for 6 months with the initial plan of recording them as live as possible all together in one room. Simon says, “Apart from COVID-19 and all the death and hand-washing, it was surprisingly the easiest album I think I’ve ever made! We were laser focussed when it came to do these songs and it shows”

Swinging from love songs (“ME AND YOU” and “I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU ANYWAY”) to hate songs (“THE FUCK-UP” and “I LOVE EVERYBODY IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD (EXCEPT YOU)”) through all points in-between, the centrepiece of the album is the nigh on 7-minute long pop epic “L-O-T-H-A-R-I-O” “That song started early one morning when a photo popped up on Facebook. I couldn't sleep and seeing it reminded me that it was taken the evening I almost had a one-night stand. I then wrote out a series of Tweets about what happened (a lot happened) and originally, I thought it could be a poem to put on an album sleeve Bob Dylan style, but somebody replied saying, “It sounds like a Leonard Cohen song” so instead it became a tune. I played it solo for the first time when we toured Europe in the autumn of 2018. It gave the band a much- needed toilet/drink/fag break in the set.”

The non-musical influences for this record include his wife, his son (“AU REVOIR MY DUDE” written as a guide to life of sorts), the venal Conservative government (“I WILL DANCE” and “YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN”), ex-girlfriends (“NORTH ROAD”) and his inability to pick up on signals (“YVONNE”) whereas musically Simon was aiming for (but not always hitting directly) Nick Lowe, Kevin Ayers, Silver Jews, Ween and all the Kinks between 1971 and 1975.

The title “LOVE, SEX and DEATH etc” comes from the fact that every song mentions or references love, sex and/or death in the lyrics. That fact makes this a concept album but even though it’s a concept album, there’s no through line no direct narrative, so you can listen to it however you want. Simon says, “I’ve asked Spotify to put the shuffle back on for this and I’ve received word back that says my email is very important to them and they’ll get back to me in 5-7 working days”

"Love, Sex and Death etc“, das neue Album von SIMON LOVE und seiner Band THE OLD ROMANTICS, wurde im Juli und November 2020 in London aufgenommen. 2020... nicht gerade ein angenehmes Jahr. Man könnte sich vorstellen, dass man da nicht gerade die Birne frei hatte, um ein großartiges Pop-Album auf-zunehmen? „Trotz Corona, all dem Sterben und dem ganzen Händewaschen ist es mir überraschender- weise noch nie so leicht gefallen ein Album aufzunehmen.“ sagt Simon. „Wir waren voller Konzentration bei der Sache!“ Und mit blitzsauberen Händen, möchte man ergänzen. Außerdem ist das Leben von hoch- sensiblen Künstlern, welche ohne Ende gute Songs schreiben und aufnehmen; welche, obwohl sie beim besten Label der Welt (=Tapete Records) veröffentlichen, noch immer nicht den verdienten Weltruhm haben, eh kein Zuckerschlecken. Da lässt man sich von so einer Pandemie auch nicht vom Schlitten hauen. „Love, Sex and Death etc.“ also ein Konzeptalbum? Simon: „In jedem Song kommt Liebe, Sex und/oder Tod vor, aber ein Konzeptalbum, so mit durchgängiger Erzählung, ist es nicht. Am besten hört man das Album, wenn man schon zu geizig ist die LP oder die CD zu kaufen, bei Spotify auf shuffle. Ich habe Spotify sogar eine E-Mail geschrieben und gebeten die Shuffle- Funktion wieder zu aktivieren. Sie haben geantwortet, dass Ihnen meine E-Mail eine Menge bedeutet!“ Voll nett von Spotify.

Und so gibt es neben Love Songs („I Will Always Love You Anyway“) auch ein paar knackige Hate-Songs mit schönen Titeln wie „The Fuck-Up“ und „I Love Everybody In The Whole Wide World (Except You!)“. Gibt eh zu wenige Hate-Songs und das, obwohl doch Hate der dunkle Zwilling von Love ist. Aber bevor wir uns hier in lustigen Wortspielen verlieren, zurück zum Album: Herzstück ist ein knapp siebenminütiger Pop-Epos namens „L-O-T-H-A-R-I-O“, inspiriert von einem zufällig auf Facebook wiedergefundenen Foto (btw: freundet euch mit Simon auf Facebook an, ist wirklich sehr lustig), welches Simon an einen beinahe stattgefundenen One-Night-Stand erinnerte. Ihr seht, lange Geschichte. Und wie Indie! Ein Song über einen One-Night-Stand, der beinahe stattgefunden hat: also mehr Indie geht nicht. Und dann noch sieben Minuten lang. Spätestens jetzt ist Simon Love in den Olymp der großen Singer/Songwriter aufgestiegen. Rückt mal ein bisschen zusammen, Nick Lowe, Kevin Ayers, Dean & Gene Ween.

Was für ein tolles Album! Wenn ihr zu dem großen Teil der Menschheit gehört welcher bedauert, dass die Kinks nie 1976 ein Album zusammen mit Wreckless Eric auf Stiff Records veröffentlicht haben, grämt euch nicht länger, kauft einfach „Love, Sex and Death etc“.
